It’s Adam Eichen again. I know we don’t usually give more than one update per week, but I’m making an exception. Something big just happened.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer just announced that the Senate will vote on the For The People Act (S. 1) in the final week of June. In other words, it’s officially game on. The clock is now ticking.
Sen. Schumer’s announcement came shortly after Senate Republicans blocked a bill to create a commission to investigate the January 6th insurrection attempt.
We will soon have much more to say about the S. 1 vote, what needs to happen before then, and how we win. For now, I just need you to know a few things:
Contrary to what the pundits claim, this bill is not dead. The For The People Act has a real chance of becoming law.
The For The People Act will not become law without massive public pressure. We have to fight for this bill. Sitting on the sidelines will not work.
You — yes, you — have a role to play in saving our democracy.
It’s going to be a heck of a month ahead. We still need to get all 50 Democratic senators on board — we are currently at 49 — and reform the filibuster. I’m including Kevin and Kate’s “How you can help” below. We will add more to this list moving forward.
Don’t give in to despair. Let’s fix our democracy together.
How you can help:
One of our previous Substacks included 5 quick and easy ways to join the fight for S. 1. You can learn more about how to get involved here. In the meantime, you can:
Call your senators and tell them that you support reforming the filibuster to pass S. 1. You can find your senators’ phone numbers, as well as where they stand on the filibuster, using our filibuster tracker!
Common Cause and Center for Common Ground are organizing regular phone banks to voters in Arizona and West Virginia in support of the For the People Act. This is a great opportunity to spread the word about S. 1. Check them out here and here.
Write a letter to the editor in your local paper sharing your support of S. 1 and urging your Senators to pass it. Not sure how to write a letter to the editor? Reach out to us at info@equalcitizens.us and we can help!
Share on social media our newsletter, our podcast, and any others S. 1 resources, and tell your friends why you support #ForThePeopleAct
